Excise Department seizes illegal Sikkim liquor worth over Rs 10 lakh from scrap warehouse in Siliguri

Siliguri, 05th September: The Excise Department conducted a raid at a scrap warehouse in the Tumbajote-Sishudangi area under Matigara Police Station and seized a large quantity of illegal Sikkim liquor. The seized liquor is estimated to have a market value of over Rs 10 lakh. Following the operation, the Excise Department sealed the warehouse.

According to the Excise Department, officials received information on Friday that a large quantity of illegal Sikkim liquor had been stored at a scrap warehouse in the Matigara Police Station area. Based on the information, a team from the Jalpaiguri Excise Department conducted a raid at the warehouse under the leadership of Sujit Das, Special Excise Commissioner, Enforcement (North).

During the search, officials recovered 45 cartons of illegal Sikkim liquor. As soon as the officials reached the warehouse, the people present there allegedly became aware of the operation and fled the spot.

The Excise Department subsequently sealed the warehouse and seized the recovered liquor bottles, which were taken to the department’s headquarters.

During the preliminary investigation, officials suspect that the liquor was brought from Sikkim and stored at the warehouse for alleged smuggling to Siliguri or Bihar under the cover of darkness.

The Excise Department is now working to identify those who fled the spot and investigate the alleged illegal liquor smuggling network.
