Death in Matigari Police custody: family and locals burn tyres, block roads near Siliguri’s Jhankar More

Siliguri, 27th February: Sensation prevailed after the locals and the family members of the deceased Bechan Roy staged a protest by blocking the fourth Mahananda bridge road near Siliguri’s Jhankar more today. Tyres were also burnt during the protest.


As per the report, the Matigara Police took a man named Bechan Roy to the police station, on Wednesday afternoon, on the charges of selling liquor. However, later in the evening, the family members of Roy were informed that Roy fell ill. Roy was taken to the Matigara Block Hospital, where he died. On Thursday morning, the Magistrate went to the Matigara Block Hospital for examination and the body was sent to the North Bengal Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Kunwar Bhushan Singh assured that proper investigation will be conducted. However, he strongly believes that Bhusan died due to illness.
