Siliguri, 12th October: CPI(M) submitted a memorandum to the office of the Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM), protesting the alleged eviction of basti dwellers and railway station hawkers and demanding that the eviction process be halted until proper rehabilitation arrangements are ensured.
The programme was organised by CITU, Basti Unnayan Samiti and the July 12 Committee. The organisations demanded that eviction proceedings remain suspended until alternative rehabilitation arrangements are provided.
The protesters stated that the livelihoods and housing of basti dwellers and railway station hawkers are closely linked to their families’ futures. They argued that eviction should not take place without ensuring proper alternative rehabilitation and called for an immediate halt to the process.
During the programme, a delegation of protesters met the ADRM and presented their demands. They reiterated that the eviction of basti dwellers and railway station hawkers should remain suspended until proper rehabilitation arrangements are made.
