Complaint over huge medical bills: Family in Kawakhali seeks justice from district CMOH

Siliguri, 09th June: Amid the concerning pandemic situation, huge amount of bills being charged in private nursing homes have added to the concern of the common people.


One such allegation surfaced from a nursing home in Kawakhali, where a family of one of the deceased patients lodged a complaint to the district CMOH against the nursing home authorities.

It has been learned that Debjani Roy, a resident of Mahakal Pally in Ward No. 10 of Siliguri, was admitted to the said nursing home on May 08 after developing pneumonia. She breathed his last on June 05 while undergoing treatment for several days.


Medical bill amounting to Rs 9 lakh was given to the deceased’s family. Allegedly, the nursing home authorities threatened to hold the patient’s body hostage and claimed to release the body only after the bill was cleared. The patient’s family somehow managed to pay Rs 3 lakh at the moment. Furthermore, they were asked to provide two blank cheques to the nursing home authorities.

Tuhin Roy and Snehashis Roy, the family members of the deceased, alleged that the nursing home authorities are repeatedly asking them to settle the bill. They also threatened to take legal action if they fail to do so.

The desperate family lodged a written complaint to the district CMOH at the Siliguri sub-divisional council on Wednesday. The CMOH assured to look into the matter. Meanwhile, the matter was reported to SMC administrator Goutam Deb. He strongly condemned the incident.
