Siliguri, 17th September: The Darjeeling District Committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) staged a protest at the Siliguri Municipal Corporation on Thursday, demanding a salary hike and timely payment of wages for temporary sanitation workers under the ‘Nirmal Bandhu’ project.
CITU leaders and temporary sanitation workers alleged that their salaries have not been increased for a long time and that they are not paid on time. They demanded an immediate hike in the wages of all temporary sanitation workers and timely payment of their salaries.
The protesters claimed that they work throughout the year, but do not receive their wages on time. They further alleged that despite working at the same salary for a long period, no steps have been taken to increase their wages.
CITU leaders reached the municipal corporation premises along with workers of the ‘Nirmal Bandhu’ project. The protesters reportedly pushed open the municipal corporation gate and entered the premises before blocking the gate and staging a sit-in protest.
Meanwhile, the ‘Nirmal Bandhu’ workers observed a work stoppage on Thursday. As a result, garbage collection from houses in the areas covered by the workers was affected.
