Siliguri, 16th September: A brief spell of rain on Wednesday left a portion of the road in the area adjacent to Tikiapara More in Siliguri waterlogged, causing inconvenience to traders, pedestrians and local residents. Local residents alleged that water from an overflowing high drain had spilled onto the road.
According to local residents and traders, a portion of the road near Tikiapara More gets waterlogged whenever it rains. Within a short time, the situation can become such that pedestrians are forced to cross the water to move through the area. The waterlogging also creates difficulties for normal vehicular movement and pedestrian traffic during rainfall.
Traders are reportedly among those facing the most difficulties. They alleged that water from the road often enters their shops, raising concerns about damage to shop goods. The waterlogging also affects the movement of customers in and out of the shops. Traders have expressed frustration over the issue, which they said has continued for a long time without a permanent solution.
Local residents claimed that the drainage channels in the area are not cleaned regularly and that there is inadequate water drainage infrastructure. According to them, this prevents rainwater from draining quickly, resulting in water overflowing from the high drain and reaching the road.
The issue is not limited to the area near Tikiapara More. Residents of several wards across Siliguri have long complained of waterlogging after brief spells of rain, with water accumulating on roads and, in some areas, entering houses and shops.
