Siliguri, 07th August: Matigara Police have arrested a member of an alleged ATM fraud gang from Kamakhya in Assam. The arrested accused has been identified as Sumeet Kumar (20), a resident of Bihar.
According to police, the gang used a unique method to carry out ATM fraud. The accused allegedly installed a special plastic trap and a device near the cash outlet of ATMs. When customers attempted to withdraw money, the cash would get stuck and not come out, leading them to believe that the ATM was not functioning.
Police said that after customers left the ATM, the accused would allegedly enter again, remove the trap and take away the trapped cash.
A similar ATM fraud incident was reported on the 23rd July in the Shiv Mandir area under Matigara Police Station limits. A written complaint was lodged at the police station on the 24th July, following which an investigation was launched.
After around 15 days of investigation, police received crucial leads and a team from Matigara Police Station reached Assam. The accused, Sumeet Kumar was arrested from Kamakhya and brought to Siliguri.
Police produced the accused before the court and sought custody for further questioning. Investigation into the case is underway.
