Siliguri, 07th October: Twelve new vehicles have been added to the Siliguri Municipal Corporation’s fleet to strengthen garbage clearance and waste transportation across the city. State Tourism Minister and Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh formally launched the vehicles at a ceremony held in front of Baghajatin Park on Wednesday.
Officials from the Siliguri Municipal Corporation and staff from the concerned departments were present at the event.
According to the Municipal Corporation, the newly added fleet comprises four earthmovers and eight dumpers. The vehicles will be used to collect garbage generated across various wards and key areas of the city and transport the waste to designated disposal sites.
The Corporation stated that the new vehicles will strengthen its existing waste management infrastructure and help improve the regular collection and transportation of garbage. The vehicles will also be deployed to clear the large volume of waste generated daily across the municipal area.
The 12 vehicles were procured at a total cost of around ₹4.42 crore. Their deployment for waste clearance and transportation began immediately after the launch.
Speaking at the event, Minister Shankar Ghosh said that the Municipal Corporation’s infrastructure is being upgraded to make the city’s cleanliness and waste management systems more effective. He added that the addition of the new vehicles is expected to accelerate garbage collection and transportation across Siliguri.
