Siliguri, 01st September: A joint operation by the Siliguri GRP SOG and NJP GRP foiled an alleged attempt to smuggle a large quantity of cannabis by train. Police seized 10.240 kg of cannabis and arrested a man in connection with the case.
The arrested accused has been identified as Tuntun Sahani, a resident of Vaishali district in Bihar.
According to police sources, surveillance was increased at Platform No. 6 of NJP station on Monday night following confidential information. After the Down Rani Kamalapati Express arrived, police conducted a search operation in an AC coach.
During the search, two bags found in the possession of Tuntun Sahani were checked. During this, police recovered cannabis packed in nine packets from the bags.
During preliminary questioning, police learned that the accused had allegedly collected the cannabis in Tripura and was travelling to Bihar with it.
Police arrested him under the NDPS Act and produced him before the Jalpaiguri court on Tuesday. The GRP is investigating the alleged smuggling network and trying to identify others who may be involved.
