Youths risk lives bathing in Teesta Canal amid scorching heat in Fulbari

Fulbari, 10th June: In the grip of an intense heatwave, youths from Fulbari and surrounding areas are increasingly gathering at the Teesta Canal near the Fulbari-Ambari road to seek relief in its waters, despite repeated warnings from the administration.

Local residents have raised alarm as dozens of young people continue to bathe in the canal daily, ignoring prohibitory orders issued by police and administrative authorities. While the cool waters offer temporary relief from the searing heat, the practice has proven fatal in past years, with drowning incidents reported annually.

Despite previous tragedies, there remains no proper security system in place. Residents expressed frustration over the lack of enforcement and the indifference shown by the youths, stating that the warnings have largely gone unheeded. Locals fear that if the trend continues unchecked, it may once again lead to loss of life.
