Siliguri, 08th September: A young woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the area adjacent to ISKCON temple in Ward No. 40 of Siliguri. The deceased has been identified as Shivani, a resident of Punjab. She worked as a floor artist at a bar in Siliguri.
According to reports, Shivani lived in a rented house in the Durga Nagar area under Bhakti Nagar Police Station. On Tuesday morning, police recovered her body from the house and sent it to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) for post-mortem examination.
Local sources said there was considerable commotion at the building on the previous night, and several young men were seen coming and going from outside. Within a few hours, news of the woman’s death spread in the area. The exact reason behind the incident is still unclear. Police said the actual cause of death will be known after the post-mortem report is received.
Local residents further alleged that two similar deaths had taken place at the same house earlier. As per informations received, around 10–15 people were staying with the deceased woman. They allegedly left the house after the incident. However, other tenants currently staying there claimed that they were unaware of the matter.
After receiving information about the incident, Ward No. 40 Coordinator Jitendra Soren reached the spot and spoke to local residents. He learnt that residents had been facing problems due to the movement of outsiders at night and loud noise in the area for a long time. Allegations have also been raised about substance abuse gatherings on the road.
Jitendra Soren said detailed information would be collected from the house owner. He also said a database would be prepared of women staying within the ward who are engaged in bar-related professions. A demand has also been made to the police administration for an impartial investigation into the incident.
Bhakti Nagar Police have started an investigation into the entire matter.
