Siliguri, 24th October: Matigara Police arrested two women during a raid at Vishwas Colony in Siliguri and recovered 283 grams of brown sugar from their house. The two women, identified as Mallika Khatun (30) and Rehana Begum (30), are reportedly sisters-in-law.
According to police sources, the two women are involved in the scrap business and allegedly used it as a cover for drug trafficking. Acting on a tip-off, police had been keeping watch on a house near the railway tracks in Vishwas Colony. After verifying the information, officers conducted a sudden raid and recovered the suspected contraband during a search.
The seized brown sugar is estimated to be worth lakhs of rupees.
Police sources said Vishwas Colony was once considered a hub of the drug trade, but the activity had declined following repeated raids and surveillance. However, the two women are suspected of becoming active again during the Durga Puja season.
A case has been registered against both women under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Police may question the accused further and seek their remand as the investigation progresses.
