Siliguri, 02nd October: A worker died after falling from the sixth floor of the under-construction Panchnai Aura Apartment in Siliguri’s Haiderpara area on 26th September.
The deceased, identified as Mokshedul Mohammed, a resident of Ambari, sustained serious injuries after falling from the sixth floor while construction work was underway. He was taken for treatment in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries.
The incident has raised questions over the safety arrangements provided for workers at construction sites. Allegations have been raised that workers were being made to carry out risky construction work without adequate safety measures.
According to a complaint lodged by Mokshedul Mohammed’s wife, Mili Sarkar, the owners had been informed on several occasions about the need to ensure adequate safety arrangements for workers during the construction work. She alleged that the concerns were not given due importance.
Following her husband’s death, Mili Sarkar has sought action against those responsible and lodged a written complaint at Bhakti Nagar Police Station.
The complaint names construction company owners Nishit Agarwal and Sarvesh Agarwal, along with site manager Surajit Adhikari and site engineer Siddharth Sarkar, and seeks action against them.
On Friday, the under-construction apartment was visited, but only a security guard was present at the site. The incident has now raised questions over what action will be taken by the police and the Siliguri Municipal Corporation.
