Rajganj, 25th January: A tragic incident took place in the Fatapukur area of Rajganj block, where the lifeless body of a young bride was found hanging from the noose in her in-laws’ home, less than a year after her marriage. The incident came to light on Sunday night and led to the arrest of the accused husband Shubhankar Kuri. The deceased bride has been identified as Pinky Das.
According to reports, Pinky Das, the daughter of Atal Das of Paschim Dhantala under the NJP police station was engaged in holy matrimony with Shubhankar Kuri, son of Dulal Kuri from Fatapukur, in the month of April of the previous year. As stated by the deceased’s family, the marriage proceedings did not involve any dowry demands from the groom’s family, besides the financial gifts and gold ornaments that were exchanged during the ceremony.
However, tension escalated in the family when Pinky allegedly faced repeated harassment and demands for additional money from her in-laws. The situation got worse when Pinky refused to comply with the demands and was allegedly subjected to physical abuse. Additionally, Pinky was allegedly harassed for not delivering the money received from the Rupashree scheme.
In this regard, Pinky’s maternal family alleged that constant pressure for dowry and subsequent abuse led Pinky to take the extreme step. Upon receiving the information about her death, her maternal family arrived at the location and found her deceased body hanging from the noose. Meanwhile, Pinky’s father Atal Das filed a formal complaint at the Rajganj police station and the accused husband was arrested in connection to the case.
Following this, IC Anupam Majumdar of Rajganj police station confirmed the arrest. On Monday, the accused was presented before the Jalpaiguri court while the entire case is under further investigation.
