Woman drowns in Mechi River on Indo-Nepal border in Kharibari’s Panitanki

Siliguri, 05th October: In a tragic incident, a woman lost her life after drowning in the Mechi River along the Indo-Nepal border. The incident occurred in Choto Badra Jote of Panitanki in Kharibari. The deceased has been identified as Hema Kharel, a resident of Gauri Village in Nepal.


According to reports, the incident took place on Saturday morning when three Nepali women were attempting to cross the Mechi River into India. Due to the high water level, all three women were swept away. While two of them managed to escape the river, Hema Kharel tragically drowned.

Her body was later found on the riverbank, some distance from where the incident occurred. Local residents alerted the authorities, and police from Kharibari’s Panitanki Outpost recovered the body. The deceased’s body has been sent to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) for post-mortem examination.


The two survivors are reportedly receiving medical treatment in Nepal.
