Siliguri, 25th October: Railway Police have arrested a woman and seized around 100 grams of brown sugar allegedly being smuggled through NJP railway station.
The arrested woman has been identified as Rihana Khatun (31), a resident of Assam’s Nagaon district.
According to police sources, the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Siliguri Government Railway Police (GRP) and the NJP GRP conducted a joint operation on Saturday based on a tip-off. When the Down Vivek Express from Assam arrived at platform number six at NJP station, police officers questioned a woman travelling in the B-5 AC coach on suspicion.
Following inconsistencies in her statements, the police searched her bag and allegedly recovered around 100 grams of brown sugar concealed inside six soap boxes. She was subsequently arrested, and a case was registered against her under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the seized narcotics were being transported from Assam to South India. The GRP plans to produce the accused before the Jalpaiguri court and seek her remand. Further investigation into the case is underway.
