Woman allegedly raped on Teesta riverbed while fetching cattle in Jalpaiguri

Jalpaiguri, 19th February: A married woman was allegedly raped while she had gone to bring back cattle from the Teesta riverbed, triggering tension in the area under Jalpaiguri’s Kotwali Police Station.


According to local sources, the woman, a resident of the Kotwali police station area, had gone to the Teesta riverbed to fetch cattle on Wednesday afternoon. It has been alleged that taking advantage of the secluded location, a youth from the neighbourhood forcibly raped her.

The incident sparked unrest in the locality after the news spread. The woman’s family lodged a written complaint at Kotwali Police Station.


Based on the complaint, police have initiated an investigation into the matter. Reportedly, after the incident, the accused’s mother was brought to the police station for questioning. The accused is currently absconding, and a search operation is underway to trace him.
