Siliguri, 07th June: The election for the Bidhan Market Byabasayee Samiti began on Saturday morning, drawing considerable attention and enthusiasm from traders. Voting commenced at 8 a.m., with around 1,700 voters expected to cast their votes.
The atmosphere in the market is festive, with tight security arrangements in place to ensure a peaceful voting process. Police personnel have been deployed across the premises to prevent any untoward incidents.
This year’s election has drawn focus due to the rivalry between two brothers, Subrata Saha and Bapi Saha, who are leading opposing panels. A total of 42 candidates are contesting in this fiercely fought election.
Subrata Saha, speaking to reporters, said voting has been peaceful so far and expressed confidence about his panel’s victory. He emphasized plans to address long-standing issues of the market, including infrastructure, cleanliness, and security, if elected.
Meanwhile, Bapi Saha acknowledged past differences that led to the formation of separate panels but expressed satisfaction over the high voter turnout. He also highlighted major concerns like parking and promised efforts to resolve city-wide issues if his panel wins.
