Siliguri, 27th October: Two Bangladeshi women were arrested at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station after allegedly entering India without valid travel documents. The women were reportedly attempting to travel to Kerala when railway police detained them during a train search.
According to railway police sources, a joint operation was conducted on Monday by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Government Railway Police (GRP) and NJP GRP when the SMVT Bengaluru Express arrived at Platform No. 6. During checks in the train’s general coach, the officers apprehended the two women.
The arrested women have been identified as Rabia Akhtar and Shiuli Akhtar, both residents of Bangladesh. Preliminary investigations suggest that they had allegedly crossed the international border and entered Meghalaya before travelling from Assam aboard the SMVT Bengaluru Express.
During preliminary questioning, the women allegedly admitted that they did not possess valid passports or visas to enter India.
Following questioning, they were taken to the NJP GRP police station, and arrangements were made to transfer them to a detention camp.
Police are investigating whether an international human trafficking network or agents were involved in helping the women cross the border and facilitating their onward journey to Kerala. Further investigation is underway.
