Siliguri, 23rd December: The Fast Track Court in Siliguri on Tuesday convicted two youths in a gang rape case involving a college student and sentenced them to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment each. The court also imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on each convict.
According to reports, the incident occurred in June 2023 when the college student was returning home. The two accused, identified as Alay Roy and Vishal Mahanto, allegedly took her to a secluded area and forcibly committed the heinous crime.
Following the incident, the student filed a complaint at Matigara police station, leading to the arrest of both accused.
The police submitted a charge sheet after investigating the case, following which the trial in the Siliguri Mahakuma Fast Track Court proceeded swiftly. The court examined testimonies from 11 witnesses and evaluated all evidence before delivering the verdict.
In addition to the 20-year imprisonment, the convicts were ordered to pay a fine of ₹50,000 each. In case of non-payment, the court ruled that the convicts will serve an additional six months in prison.
A government counsel stated that the harsh sentence serves as a strict punishment for the accused who betrayed friendship to commit such a heinous crime.
