Siliguri, 08th October: Traders staged a symbolic protest and observed a one-day strike on Thursday, demanding the immediate reopening of the Fuleswari railway gate. The traders said the closure of the gate ahead of Durga Puja has caused significant losses to businesses in the area.
The traders alleged that the railway authorities suddenly closed the Fuleswari railway gate without considering the convenience of local residents. They said the closure has disrupted connectivity in the area and adversely affected business activities.
According to the traders, the impact has been particularly severe during the Puja season, as reduced movement of customers has led to significant financial losses for local businesses.
Fuleswari Byabasayee Samiti president Prosenjit Chakraborty said the railway authorities closed the gate abruptly without any proper planning, causing a major impact on businesses. He said the decision to close the gate ahead of Puja has further increased the losses faced by traders.
Chakraborty demanded that the railway gate be reopened immediately, keeping in mind the convenience of the public and the interests of local traders. He warned that if the gate is not reopened soon, Fuleswari Byabasayee Samiti will launch a larger movement in the coming days.
