Siliguri, 05th February: INTTUC leader Prasenjit Roy and his associates have been accused of vandalizing the NJP dry port on Thursday. 6 people were arrested in the incident.
Following the incident, INTTUC District President Arup Ratan Ghosh accused Prasenjit Roy of defaming Trinamool Congress. He highly condemned the incident and stated that it was unethical and irrational for such an event to occur in the presence of the Chief Minister.
It is to be noted that the INTTUC workers, on Thursday, staged a protest in front of the land port gate demanding recruitment of local workers. The customs office was vandalized and machines worth crores were destroyed. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was present at Uttar Kanya.
On Friday, all buses, cars, e-rickshaws (Totos), and city autos were restricted at NJP station. All hotels and shops were also shut down. While Roy was not seen anywhere in the station premises, his supporters were spotted shutting down the shops. The passengers and tourists faced extreme harassment due to the strike. They were stranded for long hours after getting off the train. Some even walked long distances to board public vehicles.
Since the incident, several leaders of the party have expressed outrage over the role of Prasenjit Roy. Arup Ratan Ghosh went to the NJP station today and asked the traders to open the shops. Besides, he also stated that a meeting will be held with minister Goutam Deb after his return from Kolkata tomorrow. Allegedly, action will be taken as per the party’s decision.
