Siliguri, 05th June: A major timber smuggling operation was exposed at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station on Thursday, following a joint operation by the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF).
Acting on a tip-off, the authorities recovered a large quantity of stolen Burma teak wood from multiple coaches of a goods train that arrived at platform number two.
According to sources, the goods train originated from Assam and was en route to Howrah. Based on confidential information, GRP and RPF officials searched the train upon arrival and discovered the timber concealed within several coaches.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the involvement of railway staff, as the stolen wood appears to have been loaded en route. Authorities estimate the seized timber to be worth crores of rupees. An investigation is underway to identify those responsible for the smuggling operation.
