Siliguri, 19th December: The rising number of thefts in the city is creating difficulties for the common people, with even parked vehicles no longer safe. In a recent case from Siliguri, two thieves stole a bike and were riding it recklessly, but upon spotting the police, they abandoned the bike and fled the scene.
According to reports, Sanjay Das, a resident of Niranjan Nagar and an employee at Jio Fiber, had parked his bike in Subhash Pally area on Wednesday for work. He mistakenly left the keys in the ignition, giving the miscreants an opportunity to steal the vehicle. Das later lodged a written complaint at the Siliguri police station.
The investigation began, and on Thursday morning, SI Titu Saha of Junction Traffic Guard noticed two youths riding a bike recklessly without helmets. When he attempted to stop them, they sped away, prompting Saha to alert his team. The team later intercepted the bike near the Commissionerate Gate, but the thieves managed to escape.
Initially unaware that the bike was stolen, the traffic police traced its ownership through the number plate and discovered it was reported stolen from Subhash Pally. They contacted the Siliguri police station, which sent undercover officers to the scene. The real owner, Sanjay Das, was notified and his bike was returned to him.
Meanwhile, the police have intensified their search for the thieves and are actively investigating the incident.
