Siliguri, 05th July: A joint operation by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP) at NJP railway station led to the arrest of two individuals involved in a theft and snatching gang. The suspects, Anil Mahato and Shani Kumar are residents of Jharkhand.
Reports indicate that this gang from Jharkhand has been causing widespread havoc across West Bengal. They have been linked to several snatching incidents on trains, including the Capital Express, Kanchankanya Express, and Darjeeling Mail, over the past few days. The gang operated by posing as passengers at various railway stations, snatching mobiles and bags from moving trains before fleeing.
On Thursday, members of the gang were spotted at NJP railway station following a snatching incident on the Guwahati-Bangalore train. Acting on a tip-off and aided by CCTV footage, the GRP and RPF team apprehended two suspects on Platform No. 1 of NJP railway station.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to their crimes. Five mobile phones, stolen from passengers, were recovered from their possession. Both individuals were arrested and presented before the Jalpaiguri Court on Friday, with further investigations currently underway.
