Siliguri, 28th June: Panic spread across SF Road in Siliguri after a portion of the Hanuman temple wall, located beside the Siliguri police station, collapsed on Thursday night. The incident occurred amid ongoing road expansion work, which inadvertently damaged part of the temple structure.
Local Hindu organisations expressed strong outrage over the collapse and demanded immediate reconstruction. A significant police presence was deployed to maintain law and order.
Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb visited the site on Saturday morning. He stated that the damage occurred unintentionally during the construction of a memorial linked to historical importance. Calling the incident unfortunate, he assured that the administration would begin reconstruction work at the earliest.
The Mayor also cautioned that any attempt to stir religious sentiments or politicise the incident would not be tolerated. An administrative investigation is underway to identify those allegedly instigating political tension over the matter.
