Siliguri, 06th July: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) has removed unauthorized shops in Gurung Basti market, one of the city’s busiest markets.
On Saturday, the Municipal Corporation launched a campaign to vacate more than 300 unauthorized shops occupying PWD land. The market had long been a source of traffic congestion due to encroachments on the road, prompting numerous complaints. The SMC’s campaign aimed to address these issues by clearing the illegal establishments.
Following the removal, traders expressed their discontent, claiming they were not given sufficient notice by the Municipal Corporation. They voiced concerns over their livelihoods, stating that their families depended on these shops.
Further, the displaced business owners have demanded alternative employment arrangements from the SMC. If no such provisions are made, they have cautioned to reopen their shops at the same location.
In this regard, Ward No. 03 Councillor Ram Bhajan Mahato stated that the Municipal Corporation initiated a campaign to clear the area, ensuring smoother movement for locals. Mahato assured that a new market complex would be constructed on government land near the Kali temple in Gurung Basti, where existing businesses would be accommodated.
