Siliguri, 16th February: A discussion meeting was held regarding the SMC’s budget for the financial year 2026–27 and the revised budget for 2025–26. The meeting took place on Monday at the conference hall of the Platinum Jubilee Bhawan.
The Mayor, Chairman, councillors of the ruling board and representatives of the opposition were present at the session. This year’s budget has prioritised overall urban development and promotion of tourism in the city. Key provisions and major allocations were discussed during the meeting.
Meanwhile, the opposition described the budget as “inconsistent with ground realities and politically motivated.” Opposition councillors alleged that there is no clear roadmap for permanent solutions to the city’s water supply, drainage, solid waste management and traffic problems.
They further claimed that while emphasis has been laid on tourism and large-scale projects, allocation for essential civic services remains inadequate. According to them, the budget also lacks transparency and a concrete implementation plan.
