SMC faces obstruction during eviction drive in Champasari’s Nivedita Road

Siliguri, 30th July: In its ongoing anti-encroachment drive, the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) faced major obstacles while demolishing the shops occupying the roads and drains on Nivedita Road in Champasari.

According to reports, the demolition drive had commenced earlier on Tuesday at the vegetable market located in the Champasari More area. Upon receiving the news of eviction, MMIC member and ward councillor Dilip Barman arrived at the spot and asserted that the vegetable market could not be lifted. Subsequently, the vegetable vendors in the area staged a protest led by Councillor Dilip Barman with TMC flags. As a result, the SMC could not proceed with the eviction process at the vegetable market.

Subsequently, the eviction drive moved to Nivedita Road, where illegal constructions and shops were demolished. MMIC Dilip Barman stated that the vegetable vendors in the market are residents of Ward 46 and emphasized the need for resettlement plans before any further evictions.
