Siliguri, 30th August: In an unsettling incident in Siliguri, six ISKCON monks were physically assaulted while returning home after participating in devotional songs (bhajans). One of the accused, identified as Ranjan Chakraborty, has been apprehended, while the other, Chhoton Chakraborty, remains at large.
According to reports, on the night of August 28, the saints of ISKCON, Govindo Roy, Paritosh Roy, Mithu Roy, Jai Barman, Shubhojeet Barman, and Samar Barman, were heading back home on motorcycles after performing bhajans in the Bottle Company area, in celebration of Janmashtami.
During this, two individuals, Ranjan Chakraborty and Chhoton Chakraborty, in an inebriated state, stopped the saints near the Battala area of Samar Nagar and provoked them using abusive language. Upon condemning their behaviour, the saints were allegedly physically assaulted. Consequently, Paritosh Roy sustained serious injuries during the altercation, and the attackers also allegedly damaged one of the saints’ mobile phones.
Subsequently, a written complaint was lodged at the Pradhan Nagar Police Station on the same night. Within two hours of the complaint, the police arrested Ranjan Chakraborty while Chhoton Chakraborty is still evading the authorities. Following the incident, the ISKCON temple committee met with the Inspector-in-Charge of Pradhan Nagar Police Station to demand stringent action against the accused.
Police sources revealed that the accused attackers were brothers. The case has been forwarded to the court while the police continue their search for Chhoton Chakraborty.
