Single-use plastic to be banned from July 1! Siliguri Municipal Corporation set to take strict action against violators

Siliguri, 30th June: Plastic materials particularly poly bags, plastic bottles clog the drains and are the main cause of pollution. Therefore, the government is all set to implement the ban on the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale, and use of single-use plastic products from July 01. Pollution control board of each state will inspect the implementation of the guidelines.


Likewise, the West Bengal government has decided to ban the use of plastic bags below 75 microns of thickness in the state from July 01. The list of banned products includes plastic carry bags, shampoo bottles, soap packets, plastic cups, plates, spoons, bottles, and ear-cleansing buds.

In this regard, Siliguri Municipal Corporation Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar held meetings with several Vyavasayi Samithis (trader’s associations). The members of the committees have also supported the decision and also suggested avoiding the use of polystyrene products as well.


Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar appealed to the general public to discard the use of plastics to make the city green. Furthermore, all Borough Offices have been directed to make the general public and traders aware of the order.
