Siliguri, 28th February: On the second hearing of the Sevoke Road hit-and-run case, the court rejected the bail plea of accused Debanshu Pal Chowdhury and ordered him to remain in judicial custody for 14 days.
The tragic incident occurred on 19th February, when a speeding vehicle ran over Shankar Chhetri and a young woman walking along the road. Shankar Chhetri died in the accident, while the young woman was hospitalized in critical condition. The driver had fled the scene immediately after the crash.
Following an extensive investigation, police arrested accused Debanshu Pal Chowdhury. He is reported to be the son of a petrol pump owner in the Sevoke Road area. Police investigations revealed that Debanshu was driving the vehicle on the night of the accident.
The accused was produced before the Siliguri court. Speaking on behalf of the defense, lawyer Chinmay Saha claimed that his client had no connection to the hit-and-run and that the vehicle involved did not belong to him. Saha also alleged that the police investigation was not thorough and stated that they plan to appeal to the High Court for Debanshu Pal Chowdhury’s bail.
