Siliguri, 23rd December: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation continued its drive against illegal constructions on Tuesday by demolishing an unauthorised structure on the rooftop of a building named Capital One on Burdwan Road.
According to sources, complaints regarding illegal construction at the building were lodged with the municipal corporation a few months ago. Following this, the building department conducted an inspection and found that iron and concrete structures had been erected on one side of the rooftop, where several small rooms were constructed without permission.
The municipal corporation had earlier served notices to the builders, directing them to dismantle the illegal structure. However, as no action was taken, the civic body initiated demolition proceedings.
On Tuesday morning, engineers and staff of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation, accompanied by police personnel, reached the site and began the demolition work, which continued throughout the day.
Officials said there are similar complaints of illegal construction in several commercial buildings across Burdwan Road and other parts of the city.
Over the past three years, the Siliguri Municipal Corporation has carried out multiple demolition drives against unauthorised constructions in the city.
