Salbari/Siliguri: Fleeing thief jumps from the 3rd floor, sustains serious injures, gets admitted to hospital

Siliguri, 15th March: A thief who broke into a house and fled did not have a leg to stand on when he was confronted about the robbery. The incident surfaced from the Salbari area under Pradhan Nagar police station.

As per the information, the thief broke into a retired police officer’s house building late Monday and without being noticed, spent the night in one of its empty flats. The following morning, one of the tenants of the said building walked into the thief, who was inside her bedroom. He allegedly threatened her with a knife and escaped with mobile phones, gold bangles and her purse. He apparently came back to the same empty flat and hid.

According to house owner Nikita Rai, around 3 in the morning, her husband and she were informed that an intruder might have entered the building. Her husband immediately locked the main gate and looked around for anything suspicious. The next morning, Nikita learned about the robbery at her tenant’s house.

“They told me that the man was hiding inside the empty flat on the third floor. When my husband went to look for him, the thief jumped out of the window,” she added.

The thief received serious leg injuries after he fell from the building. He was basically anchored to the ground by the time the locals and police reached the spot. The Pradhan Nagar police took him into custody and admitted him to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for treatment. The thief was later identified as 39-year-old Sachin Rai of Badamtam Tea Garden, Darjeeling.
