Rohini toll plaza shut down following GNLF protest; vehicles can now travel toll-free towards Darjeeling

Rohini, 07th May: Amid the changing political situation in the state, the Rohini toll plaza was shut down on Thursday following a protest by GNLF workers.

On Thursday morning, GNLF leaders and supporters gathered at the toll plaza and raised slogans against toll collection. After a brief protest, toll plaza employees reportedly left the spot, leading to suspension of toll operations.

GNLF workers claimed that vehicles travelling through Rohini towards Kurseong and Darjeeling will no longer have to pay toll charges. Tourist vehicles, trucks, small cars and bikes are now reportedly moving without paying toll fees.

Notably, the Rohini toll plaza was introduced by the GTA, and toll tax had long been collected from vehicles entering the hills through the route. However, the GNLF had been continuously opposing the toll system, alleging that it imposed an additional financial burden on tourists and the general public.

Following the recent political developments in the state, the party intensified its movement over the issue, eventually leading to the shutdown of the toll plaza.
