Siliguri, 10th October: A large number of devotees gathered at Lal Mohan Maulik Niranjan Ghat in Siliguri on Saturday morning to perform Tarpan and pay homage to their ancestors on the auspicious occasion of Mahalaya.
With the conclusion of Pitri Paksha and the beginning of Devi Paksha, people from Siliguri and its adjoining areas arrived at the ghat from the early hours to perform the traditional rituals and pray for the peace and salvation of their ancestors’ souls.
According to Hindu religious beliefs, Mahalaya is an important occasion for offering prayers to departed ancestors through Tarpan. Devotees traditionally offer water and perform religious rituals on riverbanks as a mark of respect and remembrance for their forefathers.
The ghat witnessed a large gathering of devotees throughout the morning, continuing the annual tradition observed in Siliguri on Mahalaya.
Shankar Ghosh, Siliguri MLA and West Bengal Tourism Minister, also visited the Mahananda river ghat on Saturday morning.
With the arrival of Devi Paksha, the festive atmosphere has begun to build across Siliguri as residents prepare to welcome Goddess Durga. The conclusion of Pitri Paksha marks the transition from paying homage to ancestors to the much-awaited celebrations of Durga Puja.
