Siliguri, 01 st January: In the demand to field “son of the soil” Nikhil Sahani instead of an outsider in the upcoming Siliguri Municipal Corporation election, the residents of Ward No. 18 protested by blocking the road and burning tyres.
It is to be noted, on Thursday, the Trinamool Congress released its list of party candidates. When it was revealed that Nikhil Sahani’s name was not mentioned in the list, the residents of the ward, including Sahani himself, opposed the party’s decision.
On Saturday, hundreds of people from the ward took out a rally and staged a road blockade. The protesters warned that if the party does not reconsider its decision, Nikhil Sahani will contest the upcoming poll as an independent candidate. After protesting for some time, the protesters removed the roadblock following the instructions of party’s higher officials.
Reportedly, Sahani has contested in Ward No. 18 under Trinamool Congress’ ticket in the previous municipal polls too; where he won twice with huge margins. He is also very popular among the ward residents. Considering this, the party’s decision came as a major shock to him and the others.
