Residents concerned over the deteriorating state of the historical Fatapukur pond in Rajganj

Rajganj, 24th May: The condition of the Fatapukur pond, from which the place derived its name, has been deliberately deteriorating. This was a result of prolonged neglect and environmental degradation.

According to reports, the area of Fatapukur was named after the traditional pond of Rajganj adjacent to the Siliguri-Jalipaguri National Highway. Notably, the beauty of the pond would attract visitors and migratory birds. However, over the years, the pond has been neglected and damaged. The once adorned pond was now filthy with garbage.

Compounding the issue, the area surrounding the pond has been covered up by commercial establishments, including shops and hotels. As a result, the pond has been a designated location for the disposal of garbage. Meanwhile, despite multiple assurances from the administration, the pond has not been revitalized.

Due to administrative negligence and the lack of awareness of the locals, this pond is gradually shrinking. Papiya Sarkar, the Pradhan of Panikauri Gram Panchayat, has voiced concern over the dire condition of the pond, urging immediate intervention by the Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority (SJDA). Furthermore, Sarkar assured informing the matter to the higher officials for immediate resolution.
