Siliguri, 17th May: A tragic incident has come to light involving the suicide of a research scholar from North Bengal University (NBU). The incident occurred in the Ramakrishna Sarani area near Shiv Mandir in Siliguri. The deceased, identified as Babita Dutta, was a resident of Tufanganj in Cooch Behar.
As per reports, Babita was living in a rented house in the Ramakrishna Sarani area. She was pursuing her research in the Department of Rural Development at NBU.
Concern arose when her landlord noticed that her house remained closed even after noon on Thursday. Despite repeated calls, he received no response. When he broke into the room, he found Babita’s body hanging from a noose. The incident was immediately reported to the Matigara police station.
Upon receiving the news, the police arrived at the scene and sent the body to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) for a post-mortem examination.
The tragic news also brought professors and friends from NBU to her rented house, in mourning. The police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to Babita’s suicide.
She was a student of the Department of Lifelong learning and extension. There is no such Department as Department of Rural Development in North Bengal University.
