Siliguri, 22nd December: A series of road accidents on the Eastern Bypass in Siliguri has raised serious concerns over traffic safety, with authorities noting that many commuters continue to ignore basic rules despite repeated enforcement drives. In an effort to raise awareness in an unconventional manner, the traffic police on Monday launched a special awareness campaign involving Santa Claus.
Instead of imposing fines, helmetless riders were stopped and handed cakes by Santa Claus, accompanied by traffic personnel, to draw attention to the importance of road safety in a positive and engaging way.
Traffic police officials explained the importance of wearing helmets and urged riders to strictly follow traffic rules in the future.
Traffic ACP A Chakraborty, along with officials and personnel of the Ashighar Sub-Traffic Guard, were present during the awareness programme.
It may be recalled that a school student was killed in a tragic road accident on the Eastern Bypass recently. Following the incident, the traffic police have been conducting continuous awareness and enforcement drives in the area. Despite these efforts, violations have continued, prompting the authorities to once again intensify their campaign to ensure public safety.
