Protest outside Siliguri SDO office demanding increase in disability allowance

Siliguri, 17th February: Members of the Darjeeling district committee of the Paschim Banga Rajya Pratibandhi Sammilani staged a protest outside the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Officer’s (SDO) office on Tuesday, demanding an increase in the monthly allowance for persons with disabilities.

According to the organization, persons with disabilities currently receive a monthly allowance of Rs 1,000. The protesters demanded that the amount be increased to at least Rs 5,000. They alleged that while allowances for other beneficiary groups have been raised, the allowance for disabled individuals has remained unchanged.

The organization stated that those who require the most support from society are receiving the least financial assistance.

District Secretary Ram Prasad Bhattacharya said that differently-abled individuals are presently receiving Rs 1,000 per month and insisted that the allowance must be raised to Rs 5,000. He cautioned that if their legitimate demands are not met, the organization would be compelled to launch a larger movement in the coming days.
