Siliguri, 20th October: Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation stone for a new terminal building at Bagdogra Airport. The ceremony took place at Kawakhali ground in Siliguri and was attended by MoS Shantanu Thakur, Darjeeling MP Raju Bista, Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh, Mayor Gautam Deb, and other BJP leaders.
According to reports, Prime Minister Modi announced the project from a stage in Varanasi, emphasizing its importance for the region. MP Raju Bista stated that upon taking his oath, he had envisioned upgrading Bagdogra Airport to international standards, and that vision is now becoming a reality. He noted that Bagdogra Airport is one of the busiest airports in the country, and once the new terminal is completed, it will accommodate nearly one crore passengers annually, benefiting people from all across West Bengal, as well as the Darjeeling, Terai, and Dooars regions. This development is expected to enhance tourism as well.
Union Minister Shantanu Thakur added that the new terminal would provide significant benefits to both the general public and the aviation sector. He expressed optimism that with full cooperation from the state government, more initiatives could be implemented for the welfare of the citizens.
Mayor Gautam Deb, representing the Chief Minister at the event, acknowledged that the state government had provided land for the airport expansion. He also highlighted that political slogans were not appropriate for a government event.
