Siliguri, 20th June: A poultry farm built illegally in the Shalatala area of Purba Majhabari adjoining Siliguri has become a menace to the residents. A protest demonstration was also staged on Monday against the owner of the said farm on behalf of the locals.
Apparently, the odour from the poultry farm spreads all over the residential area. Elderlies and children are facing difficulty in breathing and are frequently falling sick. Walking on the road without being bothered by the foul smell has become impossible for the residents. They alleged that despite reporting the Ashighar Police station regarding the incident several times, they did not receive any response. Therefore all residents came together and marched to the poultry farm and protested.
Upon receiving the news, the Ashighar Police reached the spot and brought the situation under control by talking to the local people. The locals demanded the poultry farm be removed within a day or two, and if the issue is not resolved, they warned of taking stern action in the coming days.
In this regard, a panchayat member of the area stated that the farm was constructed illegally without the panchayat’s permission. Despite being notified several times, the poultry farm’s owner did not respond. After the incident, the poultry farm owner was contacted via a phone call. He assured to shift the farm within a few days.
