Siliguri, 24th February: Police have arrested one accused in connection with the assault on city auto drivers in the Matigara area of Siliguri. The incident took place on Sunday at Matigara Bypass More following a dispute over picking up passengers.
According to reports, a group allegedly attacked auto driver Parimal Basak after he refused to take a passenger due to lack of space. Another driver, Rabindranath Barman, who tried to intervene, was also assaulted. Both sustained serious injuries to their head and nose. A video of the incident has reportedly gone viral, showing the accused beating a driver with a belt.
Matigara police arrested MD Mustak (19), a resident of Vishwas Colony, from his residence. He has been produced before the Siliguri court.
The City Auto Drivers Union has demanded strict action against those involved. Police are continuing their search for other accused persons as the investigation progresses.
