Rambi, 22nd October: The National Highway 10 which is the arterial road that connects Sikkim and Kalimpong to Siliguri, remained closed for the second day on Friday due to the numerous landslides triggered along the route by heavy rainfall.
While the highway was cleared on Wednesday evening after remaining closed for the day, a fresh landslide took place at Birik Dara near Rambi shortly after, shutting the route once again. On the other hand, the PWD highway officials have initiated works to cut a side of the hill so that it can be opened for traffic. However, this process is estimated to take another two to three days’ time.
Due to continuous downpour, the NH 10 has been closed since last Wednesday night after the Teesta River swept the entire road at 11.30 Miles near Birik Dara near Loha Pul.
Presently, vehicles plying from Siliguri to Sikkim and Kalimpong are being diverted via Baghpul (Coronation Bridge), Bhakrakot and Lava. Meanwhile, taxis travelling from Siliguri to Sikkim are using another alternative route i.e. from Siliguri to Kurseong, Ghoom Jorebungalow, Lopchu-Pesok and then Teesta Bazaar. However, the passengers are being forced to pay double fares.
