Naxalbari, 05th October: Tea workers at Naxalbari Tea Garden have launched a protest demanding payment of their bonus. The workers said the protest began on Sunday and will continue if the bonus is not paid.
The workers claimed that 3% of last year’s bonus is still pending. They alleged that despite the Chief Minister’s direction to pay the bonus by October 5, the garden authorities have been delaying payment of this year’s 20% bonus.
The workers said tea leaves are produced through organic methods at Naxalbari Tea Garden and alleged that they work throughout the year but face difficulties when it comes to receiving their bonus. They also accused the tea owners of having an attitude similar to that of the British government.
The workers warned that the protest would continue unless this year’s 20% bonus and the pending 3% bonus from last year are paid.
Speaking over the phone, garden manager Patrick Tamang said the matter has been informed to the owners and discussions are underway regarding payment of a 10% bonus. He said the issue has arisen due to the garden’s financial crisis.
