Naxalbari, 21st September: A Group C employee of Naxalbari Hospital has been arrested along with his alleged accomplice on charges of forging documents bearing the signatures of government officials and allegedly collecting Rs 17 lakh in connection with the leasing of government land.
According to reports, the arrested hospital employee, identified as Gautam Dutta, allegedly took responsibility for arranging the lease of government land for a businessman from Bagdogra. He is accused of forging the signatures of the District Magistrate and the Land and Land Reforms Officer and providing the businessman with the forged documents. Police allege that he collected a total of Rs 17 lakh for the documents.
The businessman reportedly realised that the documents were fake after visiting the District Magistrate’s office. He subsequently lodged a complaint at Naxalbari police station.
Acting on the complaint, police arrested Naxalbari Hospital employee Gautam Dutta and his alleged associate, tea seller Subham Ghosh, during the early hours of the day.
Police sources said several other people may be involved in the case. An investigation is underway to determine how many more forged documents were supplied and whether further financial fraud was committed using the same method.
The accused were produced before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court on Monday.
