Phansidewa, 24th October: Police from the Ghoshpukur outpost in Phansidewa foiled an alleged cattle smuggling attempt and arrested two men after recovering 11 cattle from a vehicle carrying packets of chips.
According to police sources, the vehicle, bearing an Assam registration number, was travelling from Bihar on Friday night. Although it appeared to be a regular goods vehicle loaded with packets of chips, police personnel grew suspicious and intercepted it for a search. During the inspection, they discovered 11 cattle inside the vehicle.
The two arrested men have been identified as Mehedi Alam and Habibur Rahman, both residents of Assam’s Barpeta district. Police stated that the duo failed to produce valid documents for the cattle.
The rescued cattle have been sent to a shelter, while the police have launched an investigation to determine whether the arrested men were acting alone or whether other individuals or a larger smuggling network were involved.
Meanwhile, the two accused were produced before the Siliguri Sub-divisional Court on Saturday.
