N95 mask or cloth masks: Which is the better weapon in the war against COVID-19? Here’s what Dr Shankha Sen has to say

Siliguri, 23rd April: With the advent of the second wave of coronavirus, the government has set several protocols to prevent the spread of the infection. While the citizens have been urged to take full care of cleanliness and social distancing, wearing of mouth mask is said to be the most important measure for all, especially if the person is going out. With this, the question arises which type of masks should the people use to prevent the virus; Surgical masks, N95 masks or cloth masks?

During the first phase of the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, experts advised all to wear masks, preferably surgical masks, to avoid being infected with the virus. Later as the situation ‘normalized’ to a certain extent, many people opted to use cloth masks while some completely stopped using masks. However, with the second wave of the virus, the situation seems to be quite alarming in the country. Experts say the infection is going to take a more formidable form if the COVID-19 protocols are not followed properly. Therefore it is crucial to wear a mask to prevent being infected by coronavirus.

Dr Shankha Sen, a renowned physician of Siliguri, said that one must wear a mask that covers the entire nose and mouth area. He asserted that a cloth mask can never stop the virus. To avoid being infected, he recommends wearing a three-layer surgical mask. While those who are providing essential services should use N95 masks. However, if one does not have a surgical or N95 mask, then they can use a cloth mask. But it is to be noted that a cloth mask will not protect people to a great extent. Therefore, the general public has been advised to use a surgical mask when going out.
