Sikkim, 06th October: Member of Parliament, Raju Bista, expressed his profound sorrow and deep concern for the tragic situation in Rangpoo, a once-vibrant town that has been devastated by recent events. In a heartfelt statement, he painted a grim picture of the town, highlighting the eerie silence that now envelops both the Sikkim and Darjeeling-Kalimpong sides of Rangpoo.
Bista’s statement described the grim reality faced by survivors, who are enduring dreadful conditions due to the perceived incompetence of the District Administration and the West Bengal Government. Even 36 hours after the tragedy struck, approximately 250 families and over 1000 individuals have been forced to inhabit overcrowded and unsanitary rescue shelters, with no functional toilets, inadequate clothing, or proper sleeping arrangements.
The MP claimed to have communicated with District Administrative officials throughout the day, who repeatedly assured him that all necessary arrangements had been made for survivors. However, Bista found these claims to be fictional, devoid of facts, and far from the truth. While Bista refrained from pointing fingers directly, he lamented the absence of a well-structured plan by local administrative bodies to assist citizens. He expressed shock at the politicization of relief camps, describing it as shameful and unacceptable.
Bista went on to emphasize the dire conditions in the seven relief camps established by the West Bengal Government between Teesta and Rangpoo. None of these camps, he asserted, provided basic amenities such as electricity, toilets, or running water. The cramped living spaces, coupled with high humidity, pose health risks, especially for children, who lack protection against mosquitoes and other vectors.
The MP concluded his statement with an urgent plea to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to fulfil her duties toward the region. Bista noted that the people of the area contribute significantly in taxes annually and called for the immediate provision of clean living spaces for survivors. Failing that, he requested the transfer of rescue and relief efforts to competent authorities who could ensure the well-being of the affected population.
